Mechanical Engineering Staff Participation Highlights at Sri Lanka Government Services Badminton Championship 2016

Higher education is not limited to academic but also the skills and talents within people. Highlighting non-academic capabilities of academic staff members of Sri Lankan government universities, the Combined University Team which was led by Dr. Thilina Lalitharatne, a senior lecturer at Department of Mechanical Engineering, won the "Men's A division" Sri Lanka Government Services Badminton Championship 2016  that was held on 28,29 and 20th November 2016 at Mercantile Badminton Association Indoor Stadium.

The championship was organized by the Government Services Sport Association. The combined university team which consists of Mr. Chaman Wijesiriwardana, a senior lecturer at Faculty of Information Technology, University of Moratuwa, Mr. Anusha Nirmal, a physical education instructor at University of Ruhuna, Mr. Dayanidu Gunathilake, a physical education instructor at Sabaragamuwa University, Mr. Pathum Weerakkody, a lecturer at Sabaragamuwa University together with Dr. Thilina was able to beat the Sri Lanka Police Team at the final encounter with 3-1. 

Parallel to this team event, an individual badminton tournament was organized and Dr. Palitha Dassanayake, a senior lecturer and a former head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa became a semifinalist in  "Over 50 Men's single" event showing the passion towards the sport.
