ATLAS-UOM Product and Systems Development Research Laboratory

A ceremony was held at the Colombo Club, Hotel Taj Samudra on 13th of February 2013 to sign an agreement between the Ceylon Pencil Company (Pvt) Ltd. and the University of Moratuwa to establish the “ATLAS-UOM Product and Systems Development Research Laboratory” at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The main signatories to the agreement were Mr Nirmal Madanayake, CEO of Ceylon Pencil Company and Prof Ananda Jayawardane, Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa.

ATLAS-UOM Product and Systems Development Research Laboratory is the second fully sponsored such entity ( Mould and Die Design Facilitation Centre being the first ) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the result of a joint effort by the staff of both Ceylon Pencil Company and Department of Mechanical Engineering. The objectives of this long-term, multi-million rupee project are to develop products within the Ceylon Pencil Company’s business scope that includes commercially viable new products, machinery, tools and new materials, and to improve productivity through method and time studies. This project yet again reflects the closeness of the Department of Mechanical Engineering to the industry and shows the Department’s commitment to provide a unique experience to its students and the staff by engaging in research relevant to the country’s industry. Let us thank everyone at Ceylon Pencil Company for having utmost faith on the Department and also wish the project all the very best.

Mr Viraj Jayasooriya, Director/Co-Operations, Mr Ajantha Perera, Production Manager and many others from Ceylon Pencil Company and Prof RA Attalage, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof UGA Puswewala, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, and many others from University of Moratuwa were present at the event.
